Every Lord’s Day we are summonsed back into the presence of our King. By the working of the Holy Spirit, we confess that we are ascending into the Holy of Holies, into the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Though we are seated there at all times, here in this gathering, on the Lord’s Day, we are promised a meeting, a renewal of the covenant with the Lord of the whole earth. Here is our great Mt. Sinai, our Mt. Zion, the city of the living God. Here we commune with the Triune God, and here we are in fellowship with the saints in heaven, with all the saints on the earth, and with all the angels in glory. While this is not yet all that shall be, it is in many glorious ways much closer than the world has ever known. Here the barriers have been broken down between God and His people, here the barriers have come down between Jew and Gentile, between male and female, between slave and free. Here salvation is freely offered to the nations. The house of Judah has become a shelter for the world, a haven, a fortress, a colony of heaven for the world. This is the tabernacle of David, where musical instruments and singing and shouts of praise echo in glad adoration of the King come, the King crucified, the King raised to life, the King ascended and seated in glory. But you must believe this. You must believe this now. You must put all of your cares, all of your fears, all of your burdens, you must put them all down here. This is not to ignore them or pretend that they don’t exist like some kind eastern meditation gimmick. To put them down is to place them at the feet of the King of the whole Universe. To put them down is to orient them to the reality that Jesus is Lord and there is no other. So whether you face financial struggles, sickness or disease, interpersonal conflict, marriage troubles, strains with your children or friends or neighbors, you must give them to your Lord and King. If you hold back, you are saying that you have another King, another Lord, you don’t think Jesus is qualified to take care of it for you. But we have no other King. There is no other Name in heaven or on earth whereby men must be saved. Call on the name of the Lord, and you will be saved.
